Nishida was working as a graphic artist at Game Freak when the first Pokémon game was made. Pikachu was first meant to be a squirrel – the cheeks come from the way squirrels store food in theirs – and it was Satoshi Tajiri who later made it a mouse. She also designed Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle, and later Espeon, Umbreon, Leafeon, Glaceon, Sylveon and Marshadow among others.
She has illustrated Pokémon cards since the early years. The best known is Pikachu Illustrator, which sold for $195,000 at auction in 2019 and entered the Guinness World Records as the most expensive Pokémon card. Her holo cards also include Erika’s Clefable in Gym Heroes, Espeon in Neo Discovery and Umbreon in Skyridge.
Today Nishida works freelance, on Pokémon and on other things – she was, for example, the main illustrator for the Japanese version of Ragnarok Online. She is known for being very private; in a 2018 interview she sat hidden behind a giant Pikachu plush.
A loose card has left its packaging and is therefore sold as a used item, however clean it is. Sealed products are sold as new. What does the condition mean?
